Gloucester Point sidewalk project completed

A project was completed recently that should make it easier for pedestrians to get around at Gloucester Point.

“I’m happy to report that the sidewalk project on Route 17 at Gloucester Point is complete,” Kelly Hannon, communications manager for the Virginia Department of Transportation’s Fredericksburg District, said Dec. 12, “and it is now open for pedestrian use.”

The last punch list item, a final piece of handrail, was scheduled to be completed on Dec. 15, Hannon said.

The sidewalk was installed on the east side (Gloucester Point Post Office) of Route 17 from just north of the toll plaza for the George P. Coleman Memorial Bridge to Farmwood Road (by Pizza Hut restaurant).

Hannon said that Jireh Construction Co., Inc., of Richmond was the general contractor for the sidewalk project. Sidewalk was installed on an approximately 0.6-mile stretch of Route 17, she said.
