Gloucester native named associate VP at Riverside Regional

Shelly Johnson has been named associate vice president for administration at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. In the role, Johnson oversees facility operations, including Master Plan construction, with a commitment to overall patient experience and outcomes, according to an announcement last week from Riverside Health System.

Johnson spent the last five years as Director of Finance and then Senior Director of Operations at Riverside Walter Reed Hospital in Gloucester. She began work for Riverside 22 years ago, though her roots to the most comprehensive health facility in Hampton Roads date back even further than that: she was born there.

Johnson has spent the majority of her career at Walter Reed, moving from central registration into managerial roles. These have included Director of Patient Relations/Registration, then Revenue Cycle, then Finance in 2014. She became the Senior Director of Operations at Walter Reed in spring 2019 and began her current role at the Medical Center in January.

“I had been at Walter Reed for so long; it is such a family atmosphere,” Johnson said. “I was a little nervous moving here because of its size, but it is a very family-focused team. The patient experience is great. Every day presents a new challenge.”

Current renovation and construction projects underway at Riverside Regional include the expansion of Laboratory Services, which will also be outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment. Johnson oversees the space planning for that effort and several others.

Johnson, a native of Gloucester, holds a master’s degree in public administration from Troy State University in Alabama and a bachelor’s degree in business from Christopher Newport University.

She and husband Tyler recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. They are parents to two daughters, Hunter-Paige and Channy.
