The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is making a splash locally on Saturday, May 19, with the annual event being held on the same day in both Gloucester and Mathews counties. 

The Mathews Relay will be an all-day event at Mathews High School, beginning with a flag-raising ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and concluding with a Chinese lantern ceremony at 9:30 p.m. 

The Gloucester Relay, to be held at Gloucester High School, will be an all-nighter, beginning at 5 p.m. with a martial arts warm-up by Jerry Lemon and ending at 6 a.m. Sunday with the closing ceremony, "Fight Back."

Katie Dutton, organizer for the Mathews Relay, said her committee has a lot in store for cancer survivors, their friends and families, and members of the Mathews community. Music will be provided by DJs Tommy Eriksen and Edwina Casey; the one-man band, Brent Small; and the Ebenezer Church Men’s Choir.
