Gloucester, Mathews students head back to school Monday

School buses will be rolling and students will be back in classrooms as the 2025-2026 school year begins Monday in public schools across Virginia, including Gloucester and Mathews.

According to Gloucester County Public Schools superintendent Dr. Anthony Vladu, the district is operating on an average daily membership of 4,700 students. This projection was determined in March and is what the current budget is built on.
“We’re closer to 4,900,” he said about student count. The district will have a clearer picture on enrollment numbers after the first 10 days of school.
GCPS will continue adhering to the tenets of its strategic plan, including focusing on student achievement, workforce readiness, attendance, community engagement, college preparedness and more. Vladu is also focused on positive student culture and listening to students.
