Gloucester man killed in Rt. 17 accident

A Gloucester man was struck and killed on Route 17 Tuesday evening after he stopped to assist with a disabled vehicle near the intersection with Providence Road.

State police spokesman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said Patrick Danforth, 36, of Hayes left his vehicle to assist a disabled vehicle by pushing it out of the road.

Anaya said Danforth then ran across the northbound travel lane, which had a green light, and was struck by a northbound 1992 Suzuki Sidekick as it went through the intersection just before 7:30 p.m. She said Danforth died upon impact.

Anaya said the driver of the Suzuki, a 50-year-old Gloucester man, was not injured. The driver was not charged.

This was the fifth traffic fatality in Gloucester in 2015. ...
