Gloucester man faces murder charge in connection with neighbor’s death

A 30-year-old Gloucester man was charged with first-degree murder and unlawful wounding in the commission or attempted commission of a felony after his neighbor was found dead in her home Wednesday with a gunshot wound.

Lt. Scott Little of the Gloucester Sheriff’s Office said deputies discovered the body of 48-year-old Karen Kay Kelly at her home in the 4700 block of Hickory Fork Road just after noon Wednesday. He said officers were responding to a 911 call from a friend of Kelly’s who went by to check on her.

Little said Kelly apparently died from a gunshot wound to the head. He said the subsequent investigation, which is continuing, led officers to charge Richard Earl Witcher Jr., 30, also of the 4700 block of Hickory Fork Road. Little would release no further details Thursday.
