Gloucester man dies in ultralight crash

A 64-year-old Gloucester man died last Thursday when the ultralight aircraft he was piloting crashed in the Wake area of Middlesex County.

The pilot, Gilbert Dennis Gregory of the 14000 block of Route 17 in Glenns, was the only occupant of the aircraft and died at the scene, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police.

Anaya said state police were notified at 2:08 p.m. by a citizen who saw the plane crash. State police located the aircraft just before 3 p.m.

The Virginia Department of Forestry was called to clear the crash site area, she said, and a bomb team was called to deploy the aircraft’s parachute, which did not deploy prior to the crash, to render the scene safe.
