Gloucester man dies in single-vehicle crash

A Gloucester resident died after he was ejected from a vehicle involved in a single-vehicle crash Friday night on Hayes Road, according to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police.

Thomas Michael Tarr, 30, of the 8100 block of Brook Court, was a passenger in the vehicle; he died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, which took place shortly after 10 p.m.

Preliminary investigations reveal that a 2002 GMC Sonoma pickup truck, driven by David W. Belvin, was traveling southbound on Hayes Road north of Hook Road when Belvin lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway, attempted to overcorrect the vehicle, striking a Dominion Power guide line and a ditch, causing the vehicle to overturn.

Belvin was transported to the hospital with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. The Gloucester Point man has been charged with driving under the influence and refusal, Anaya said.

This was the second motor vehicle fatality of 2023 in Gloucester County.
