A Gloucester man died Friday in a single-vehicle accident on Route 17 at White Marsh. Michael Shawn Utley, 40, of Poplar Trail died at the scene of the crash that occurred in the 5200 block, according to state police spokesman Michelle Anaya.

Anaya said Utley was driving a 2000 Lincoln Towncar northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 17 before running off the road and striking a retaining wall at Rappahannock Concrete just before noon. Utley was the only occupant of the vehicle and was not properly restrained.

Anaya said it was not known where Utley got on Route 17. The accident was investigated by trooper Raymond Speas. This was the first traffic fatality in Gloucester County for 2014.
