Gloucester man dies in head-on collision on Route 14

A head-on vehicle collision on Route 14 in Mathews on Monday took the life of a Gloucester County man.

The accident occurred at 12:39 p.m. at 12747 John Clayton Memorial Highway. A 1999 GMC Savana van driven by William S. Diller, 29, of Callao was travelling Route 14 in the westbound lane and attempted to pass on a curve that was clearly marked as a no passing zone, according to the Virginia State Police.

The VSP said Diller struck an eastbound 2004 Chrysler Town and Country van head-on, causing the Chrysler to travel off the roadway and into the ditch. The Chrysler’s driver, Franklin Grayson Williams Jr., 75, of Hornets Nest Road in Gloucester, was killed upon impact, state police said.

Williams’s passenger, Lisa Morgan Temple, 57, of Mathews was seriously injured in the crash and was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News. Diller also suffered serious injuries and was transported from the scene.
