Gloucester JV girls beat Mathews in overtime

The Gloucester High School junior varsity girls’ basketball team scored its second win over Mathews last Wednesday, but it wasn’t easy as the JV Lady Devils put up quite a fight, losing in overtime to the Group 5A opponents, 26-24. The two losses to Gloucester are the only defeats for Mathews this season.

Mathews trailed, 18-12, going into the fourth quarter, when the Devils began to rally. MHS pulled within one point of the Dukes with 20 seconds left. Emily Carmine got fouled and was awarded two free throws. The crowd went silent as Carmine went to the line. The first shot went up and rattled out. Mathews needed the last free throw and Carmine didn’t disappoint, sinking the shot to tie the score at 24-24.

In the two-minute overtime, Gloucester scored the only points to win Ellie Armistead had a team-leading 13 points for MHS, followed by Skyller Worley with eight. Mathews traveled to King and Queen on Tuesday and picked up an easy win, 46-25. The game didn’t ...
