The Gloucester Fair will not be held this year, Rachael Burnette, vice president of the Gloucester Fair Association, announced last week.
The fair was heading into its 42nd year, although no dates had been set. The main cause for suspension of the activities, Burnette said, was the inability of last year’s carnival to take part and of organizers to find a replacement in time. She said a continuing weak economy has also dampened attendance in recent years.
The sponsoring association also needs more year-round workers, Burnette said, to help organize the event which in recent years has taken place at Ark Park, a site which the group purchased in 1974.
For many years the fair was held on the grounds of Page Middle School on Route 17, formerly Gloucester High School and Gloucester Intermediate School.
