Gloucester boys win conference, fall in regionals

Gloucester celebrated after winning the Conference 10 baseball title on Saturday at War Memorial Stadium, but an 8-0 loss to Kempsville in the first round of the 5A South Regional Tournament ended the Dukes’ season Monday.

Gloucester opened the conference tourney with two innings of scoreless play with Warwick on May 23 prior to a rain delay that lasted until last Thursday. When play resumed, the Dukes beat the Raiders, 8-1, to advance to the semifinals.

Cody Shiflett got the win on the mound against Warwick while Grayson Womble, Carter Miller, Jason Wood, Trey Fortner and Reese Oden all had hits.

Meeting Bethel in the semis on Friday, Gloucester won, 7-3, to earn a regional berth. Cash Watkins pitched the first four innings and Brett Lindsay closed out the last three.

Wood had a pair of hits in the win and Fortner contributed three hits and two RBIs. Shiflett added a two-run triple to the offensive effort.
