Gloucester boys post 1st season win over MHS

The Gloucester High School varsity boys’ basketball team claimed its first victory of the year on Monday over the Mathews Blue Devils in a dominating 83-63 game.

The game started close as fans packed the gym at Mathews. MHS commanded the opening minutes with strong ball movement and a controlled pace of offense. The Dukes quickly changed the tide as they moved the ball and created easy points under the basket.

The first quarter ended with Gloucester holding a 17-10 lead. Gloucester took over in the second quarter, led by Dylan Deyoung who ended the first half with 23 points. Turnovers hurt Mathews as Gloucester scored many of their points in transition. The Dukes went into halftime with a commanding 20-point lead. The second half was filled with runs from both teams as Gloucester extended its lead to 25, but Mathews would later cut it to 19. The third quarter ended with Gloucester leading, 57-38.
