Gloucester board expected to approve redistricting plan

The Gloucester School Board is expected to approve a school attendance zone redistricting plan for the 2017-2018 school year during its work session next Thursday, March 30, at the T.C. Walker Education Center.

A redistricting committee comprised of parents, teachers, school administrators, transportation department heads and two school board members met in January and February and is recommending two redistricting plans. 

The first plan affects elementary schools with the goal of reducing student populations at Abingdon and Botetourt elementaries and balancing enrollment among all five campuses.

The recommended plan moves 60 children from Abingdon and sends 26 of them to Achilles and 34 to Bethel. The 34 moving to Bethel reside on Hickory Fork Road from Aberdeen Creek Road to Route 17. 

The 26 moving to Achilles reside along Hayes Road from Hoefork to Bellehaven and include those that live on Hoefork Road, Church Road, Riverpark Road and Green Drive.
