The Gwynn’s Island Civic League Foundation recently awarded two $1,000 scholarships to Mathews High School graduating seniors. Ellie Congrove and Morgan Stearns received the scholarships based on their academic and community achievements throughout their high school careers as well as on their families’ connections to Gwynn’s Island.
Congrove is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club, participates in soccer and indoor track, has worked at The Hatchery and Mathews Yacht Club, volunteered at a farm in Ecuador, and taken Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes through Rappahannock Community College. She will attend the University of North Carolina Wilmington in the fall, majoring in Nursing.
Stearns has been recognized as Student of the Month twice, is taking Dual Enrollment classes through Rappahannock Community College, received a Coach’s Award and the Patrick Sopko Award, and was named Rookie of the Year through her participation in cross country, soccer and indoor track. She has worked at Mathews Dance Studio, The Hatchery, volunteered on a mission trip to Mexico, and assists with Operation Christmas Child. She will be attending Christopher Newport University to major in Social Work.
