GHS wrestlers win district tournament

The Gloucester Dukes varsity wrestling team came out on top in the Peninsula District Tournament Saturday night at Phoebus High School. The team put up a total of 178 points to claim the district championship, recording 17 victories with 16 coming by way of fall.

The Peninsula District victory is made all that sweeter having lost head-to-head matchups against district opponents Phoebus and Woodside. Head coach Kyle Bell said his team had redemption on their minds coming into the tournament.

Taking the title of district champion in their respective weight classes were Aiden Sheesley (106 lbs.), Micah Bodiford (120 lbs.), Ty Baker (126 lbs.), Corey Skay (132 lbs.) and Karl Dean (144 lbs.).

Second-place finishers were Joey Foley (215 lbs.) and J.R. Jones (heavyweight). Rylan Altrath (113 lbs.) took third place while Clayton Smith (150 lbs.), Hayden Fox (157 lbs.) and Makai Scatliffe (190 lbs.) finished in fourth place.
