GHS wrestlers place third in Ram Cup

Gloucester High School grapplers are off to a good start with a dual meet win and a third-place finish in the Ram Cup.

The Dukes were third among eight competing teams at the Ram Cup on Saturday at Lafayette High School. Hunter Owens, at 152 pounds, and Nathanael Van Ness, at 285, won gold medals in the tournament. 

Second place went to Gloucester wrestlers McKenzie Walker at 126, Aaron Parr at 132 and Cameron Walker at 195. Khayleb Whiting was third at 220 and Russell Simpson was fourth at 170. The Dukes opened the season Dec. 2 at Hampton and dominated the match 66-11 with six pins. For Gloucester, Will Neikirk at 138 pinned his opponent in 1:20, Jasper Scarberry at 145 got a pin in 5:14 and Jacob Raines at 152 got a pin in 3:07.

Also, Owens at 160 pinned his opponent in 1:26, Hunter Fairweather at 170 got a pin in 1:25 and heavyweight Van Ness earned his pin in 23 seconds.
