GHS wrestlers busy during winter break

Gloucester High School wrestlers were busy during the winter break with the varsity and junior varsity grapplers competing in separate tournaments.

The varsity Dukes participated in the Colon E. Baker Elite Classic Tournament hosted by Great Bridge on Dec. 29 and 30. The competition was stiff with some weight brackets having 16 to 20 wrestlers. The top eight finishers placed and the top six were awarded medals.

For Gloucester, Hunter Owens took first place at 152 pounds. Cameron Walker and Nathanael VanNess each placed third at 195 pounds and heavyweight, respectively. Tanner Leigh was fifth at 220 and McKenzie Walker was seventh at 126. The junior varsity Dukes competed Dec. 30 in the Godwin JV Holiday Tournament at Mills Godwin High School in Henrico. Khayleb Whiting had the best showing for the GHS juniors, taking first place at 220 pounds. 

Also, Jasper Scarberry and Ethan Lineberry were third and fifth, respectively, at 145 and heavyweight Jordan Roane placed fifth.
