Gloucester High School winter track athletes had a successful Peninsula District opener on Dec. 20 at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. The GHS girls took third place overall among nine PD teams and the boys took second place, finishing just eight points behind the winners from Warwick.
For the Lady Dukes, Jazmine Banks and Evan Wagner won their respective shot put and high jump events. Banks tossed the shot 37’10" and Wagner cleared the bar at five feet. Kayla Sadler continued the girls’ success by taking third place in the 1000 meter race in 3:27 and Ali Porner won the 3200 race in 15:28.
For the Dukes, Robert Freiermuth and Troy Thomas dominated the pole vault, taking first and second, respectively. Freiermuth overcame an injury to launch himself 9’6" and Thomas cleared nine feet. Kevin Speray and Blake Waters picked up the momentum and won their events to push the boys into second place. Speray won the 1000 meter race by a seven second margin...
