GHS student wins award at VSP Cadet Program

American Legion Post 75 in Gloucester sent nine Gloucester High School rising seniors, all from the NJROTC program, to the Virginia State Police Youth Cadet Law Enforcement Program July 9-14 at the VSP Academy in Richmond.

The goal of the program is to teach the cadets respect for law and order and promote good citizenship. Up to 50 students from all over Virginia receive classroom and hands on training in all aspects of law enforcement along with team building. 

Each summer, American Legion members serving as counselors for the program select one cadet to receive the Jessica J. Cheney Spirit Award. The cadet must exhibit qualities of spirit and sportsmanship throughout the week of the program. The memorial award hangs in a place of honor at the VSP Academy and a new name is added every year. This summer, the winner of the Cheney Spirit Award was GHS cadet Jaydan Perkins. She also received her own memorial plaque to take home.
