Gloucester High School senior Rachel Abbott has been chosen for the 2014 All-Virginia Band. Abbott was selected during auditions Saturday at James Madison University.

Abbott was picked as a first chair French horn player for the District VIII Band, but the district concert was cancelled because of inclement weather. As holder of one of the top four French horn chairs in the district, Abbott earned the opportunity to audition for the state band.  Abbott and 77 other French horn players competed for 21 slots in the two bands and orchestra that will comprise the All-Virginia Band and Orchestra, which will rehearse and perform at Virginia Tech in April. Abbott earned fifth chair in the state symphonic band.

A drum major for the GHS marching band for three years, Abbott is a two-time Virginia Tech Honor Band participant and a four-time district band selection. Abbott is the daughter of Linda Tjossem of Hayes, and Deke Abbott of Annapolis, Md....
