GHS softball ties for district title

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team defeated the Hampton Crabbers, 19-1, on Tuesday to complete a 17-3 regular season and a tie for the Peninsula District softball title.

Mackenzie Smith and Kirsten Greene split the game on the mound and combined for 10 strikeouts while giving up four hits.

The Dukes scored six runs in the first inning on only two hits as Emma West had an RBI double and Jessica 

Hogge followed with a two-run home run.

In the 12-run second inning, Gloucester hit for the cycle as Tori Mielnik and Smith hit singles, Malaika Rilee and Greene had doubles, Bridget Motley led off the inning with a triple, and Laura Tobin (two-run home run) and West (grand slam) each hit long home runs. Leighanne Harper completed the scoring with an RBI single in the fourth inning.

Gloucester will open up regional play against an undetermined opponent at Stoney Run Sports Complex in Newport News on Memorial Day Monday. First pitch is at 11 a.m.; the cost of entry is $10....
