GHS softball team earns Eastern Region bid

The Gloucester High School varsity girls’ softball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit to capture its third straight Peninsula District title in a 10-4 win Friday at Warwick. The victory sends the Dukes to the Eastern Regional Tournament that begins May 28 at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach.

Gloucester gave up two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning with the Raiders, but began to recover with a triple from Taylor Distefano in the fourth that scored Makayla Jenkins. Distefano then beat the throw home on a fielder’s choice from Colleen Lemay to tie it 2-2.

With two outs and runners on second and third, Alissa Upton singled to score Dez’re Maynora and Noodle Allen to claim a 4-2 lead. Upton later scored to make it 5-2. Hannah Joyce ended the fourth-inning scoring run when she came home on a single from Shelby Alto to make it 6-2.
