GHS softball season never got off the ground

The Gloucester High School 2020 softball season never got off the ground due to COVID-19; the careers of eight players will come to an end without a final high school season.

The 2020 Dukes did not get a chance to win or share their third district championship from 2019 and did not get a return trip to the VHSL Group 5 softball tournament. But all eight GHS seniors will be attending college and five will continue their athletic careers.

Pitcher Mackenzie Smith will be attending Winthrop University on a softball scholarship and majoring in biochemistry. Smith was an all-state selection for the past two years and was headed for milestones of 100 hits and RBIs had the season been played.

Shortstop Laura Tobin, who was an all-region selection as a junior, will attend Meredith University to major in business. Tobin was nearing the 100 hit plateau for her career and will be competing with the Avenging Angels softball team.
