GHS softball records shutout wins against Kecoughtan, Hampton

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team achieved two shutout wins this past week on the road against the Kecoughtan Warriors and Hampton Crabbers.

The Lady Dukes finished their two-game sweep against the Warriors with a 13-0 win last Thursday. Autumn Cookson pitched the whole game, giving up five hits and striking out 12 hitters without issuing any walks.

Gloucester took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Cameron Palas walked, Hannah Horsley singled and Tessa Carteret hit a double RBI to drive her teammates home.

The Lady Dukes padded their lead in the third inning when Avery West singled and Palas hit a home run over the left center-field fence for a 4-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Kyndall Sales doubled and later scored on an Addison Keister single for a 5-0 lead.

In the fifth inning, Horsley and Carteret hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Alexis Dishman drove in Horsley, while Carteret and Sales, who walked, scored on a Keister double for an 8-0 lead.

Gloucester finished scoring in the seventh inning with five runs on six hits for a 13-0 lead. During the game, Horsley and Keister led the Lady Dukes with four hits and four RBIs, respectively. Palas, Carteret and Sales each contributed two hits apiece.

Hampton

Gloucester defeated Hampton, 28-0, Tuesday afternoon. West pitched all 15 outs in the game and also contributed three hits and four RBIs.

During the game, Cookson had four hits with a double and a triple to go along with five RBIs. Palas also recorded four hits and two RBIs. Horsley had three hits, six RBIs and a three-run home run. Lilly Hogan also had three hits with four RBIs and Carteret contributed two hits and two RBIs for the Lady Dukes.

Gloucester hosted Manor High School on Wednesday, but a final score was not available at press time. The Lady Dukes will host Hampton this afternoon.

On Monday, Gloucester will travel to Churchland High School and will be on the road again Tuesday to face Denbigh. All games have a 4:30 p.m. start time.
