GHS softball record stands at 5-1

With a pair of wins and a loss in recent action, the Gloucester High School varsity softball team stands at 5-1 going into its game with Menchville at 4:30 p.m. today at GHS.

The Dukes toppled the home-standing Phoebus Phantoms, 27-1, on Tuesday as freshman Kirsten Green picked up her first high school win. Green gave up one hit, one run and struck out four in her three inning stint. Kayla Tobin closed out the game by pitching two perfect innings.

Kecoughtan upset visiting Gloucester, 3-2, on Saturday. The Dukes had runners in scoring position in six of seven innings but could not get on the board until the seventh. 

Down 3-0 with two outs in the seventh, Bridgett Motley singled, Alyssa Shackelford was hit by a pitch and Morgan Haywood walked to load the bases. Kaleigh Arnett singled to cut the lead to 3-2 but Gloucester could not push the tying run across. The Dukes defeated Hampton, 13-1, Friday evening at the Stoney Run Sports Complex in Newport News.
