GHS softball beats Heritage, Denbigh; record is 11-2

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team posted a pair of mercy-rule shutout wins over Heritage and Denbigh, and dropped an eight-inning contest on Friday to the Kecoughtan Warriors to bring the Lady Dukes’ season record to 11-2.

In an eight-inning affair Friday afternoon, Gloucester fell by a 4-1 margin to Kecoughtan. Kirsten Greene (5-2) picked up the loss even though the junior right-hander struck out 13 batters.

The Dukes took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning as Courtney Hall singled and advanced to second on a Mackenzie Smith walk. Greene drove in Hall on a single to left field putting runners on second and third with one out. However, the Dukes could not push across another run.

The Warriors tied the score in the sixth inning on a leadoff triple and an error later in the inning. From there, Kecoughtan loaded the bases in the eighth inning and emptied them on a triple for a 4-1 lead.
