GHS softball advances to regional play

With a 6-1 win over Indian River in the Conference 10 Tournament semifinals on Monday, the Gloucester High School varsity softball team earned a berth in the 5A South Regional Tournament that begins Monday at Princess Anne High School.

Shelby Alto led the Dukes (18-1) against Indian River with three hits, including a two-run double, in support of Morgan Haywood’s pitching. Alissa Upton led off the second inning and Nealcyn Watkins walked and stole second to put two Gloucester runners in scoring position. Alto then double to the right center field gap for a 2-0 lead.

With the score at 2-1 in the fourth, Watkins, Alto and Macy Robbins each singled to load the bases. Watkins scored on a wild pitch and Alto and Robbins scored on a double from Kaleigh Arnett to make it 5-1. Pinch runner Breanna Faulkner scored on a single from Upton to leave the score at 6-1.
