GHS soccer falls to Hickory in regional semis

The Gloucester High School boys’ soccer team made it all the way to the Class 5 Region A semifinals before falling to the Hickory Hawks, 5-0, on Tuesday night. To make it to the regional semifinals, #7-seed Gloucester defeated the second-seeded Maury Commodores last Wednesday, 3-2.

The Dukes drew an extremely tough opponent last week to start the regional tournament. Gloucester had already played the Commodores once this season and that game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Last Wednesday, Maury struck first. The Dukes quickly replied with a goal from Caleb Hines. Within three minutes, Gloucester took the lead on a goal from Daniel Bendit. The Commodores ended up tying the game and regulation play ended, 2-2.

After two overtime periods and two golden goal periods, the teams went into penalties where starting keeper Cody Jaquysh, gave the honor to his brother Dylan, believing Dylan was better at penalties. The penalties ended in a tie so they had to move onto sudden death. With Maury...
