GHS soccer eliminated in regional quarterfinals

The Gloucester High School varsity boys made it to the Eastern Region Soccer Tournament but came up short in the quarterfinals Tuesday. The Dukes, playing without two starters, were held to only two shots on goal and fell, 1-0, to Maury High School.

Prior to regional play, the Dukes lost a hard-fought, penalty-ridden Peninsula District Tournament championship game to Menchville, 2-1, at GHS on Friday.

After the Monarchs went up, 1-0, Chris Bendit tied it for Gloucester with a header. It looked like the match was going into overtime until Menchville’s Brian Meier slipped the game winner past keeper Lee Loudermilk with just under a minute remaining.

Following the tournament, Gloucester forward Kyle Rowe, midfielder Jacob Allen and defender Dustin Tietjen were each named to the PD First Team. Named to the Second Team were midfielder Austin Williams, defender Clay VanGieson and Loudermilk. Trip Vaughan received an Honorable Mention.
