GHS shuts out Kecoughtan to improve to 5-0

The Gloucester High School varsity Dukes improved their softball record to 5-0 on Tuesday with a 10-run shutout of visiting Kecoughtan. 
Mackenzie Smith pitched a no-hitter, drove in a run and mowed down the Warriors with 13 strikeouts. Kecoughtan put only two balls in play as Kirsten Greene and Laura Tobin each fielded ground balls in the fourth inning for outs.
The Dukes took a quick 2-0 first inning lead without the benefit of a hit. Gloucester loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, setting the stage for two ground-ball outs by Tobin and Smith for the lead.
In the second inning, Makenna Keyes walked with two outs, stole second and scored on a sharply hit drive over the shortstop’s head by Bridget Motley for a 3-0 lead. The Lady Dukes had runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but could not push any runs across.
