GHS senior wins public speaking competition

Gloucester High School senior Cody Davis won the American Legion Third District High School Oratorical Competition held Saturday at American Legion Post 368 in Newport News.

Davis advanced to the district event as the winner of the local Gloucester Post 75 oratorical contest in November. GHS junior Alexis Carter was the runner-up in that competition, and Mathews Post 83 sponsored her to the district event Saturday in Newport News where she placed third.

In the competition, contestants had to speak extemporaneously for eight to 10 minutes on the subject of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights. They next spoke for three to five minutes on a constitutional amendment, determined by a blind draw, after having a brief time to prepare.

Davis was awarded a medal, plaque and $150 in scholarship funds for his district level win. He will next compete in the regional contest scheduled for Feb. 8 in Smithfield.
