After learning about an elementary school that was destroyed by a tornado, the Gloucester High School Renaissance Leadership class jumped into action to help provide relief.
London Elementary School in Kentucky was devastated by a tornado on May 16, inspiring these GHS students to hold a donation drive. Many students connected this disaster to their memory of the tornado that destroyed Page Middle School in 2011, according to renaissance teacher Beth Coleman.
Because the donation drive being held at the end of the school year, the class expected low turnout and planned to ship the donations. After only two days, the class had received too many donations to reasonably ship.
In addition to GHS, Abingdon, Achilles and Bethel elementary schools, as well as central office, collected items. GHS Y Street donated $150 so the class could purchase more items like baby wipes, diapers and hygiene products. Over 1,100 items were collected and packed in nearly 50 boxes.
