GHS opens season with 10-4 win

The Gloucester High School varsity girls opened the 2015 softball season with a 10-4 win over visiting Woodside on Tuesday. Gloucester coach Red Lindsay said shoddy defense by his team, along with five errors, led to four unearned runs for the Wolverines.

Lindsay said a Gloucester error and a botched run-down led to two quick Woodside runs in the top of the first inning to make it 2-0. The Dukes responded in the bottom half, with consecutive singles from Shelby Alto, Macy Robbins and Alyssa Shackleford and a three-run triple by Morgan Haywood to give Gloucester a 3-2 lead.

Woodside tied the score in the top of the third with another Gloucester error on a failed rundown. The Dukes retook the advantage 4-3 when Alissa Upton and Jessica Hogge singled with two outs and Tori Brown followed with a single to score Upton.

Gloucester put the game out of reach with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth. Haywood, Upton and Hogge each had RBI singles that ran the score to 10-3. Woodside t...
