GHS opens baseball season with win

After the season opener with Kecoughtan was rained out on March 14, Gloucester High School varsity baseball players pulled out a 2-1 win at Woodside on Friday to open the 2017 schedule.

The Dukes were down, 1-0, going into the seventh inning when they tied the game with an RBI double from Trey Fortner that scored Jason Wood.

Gloucester took over in the 10th inning when a bases-loaded walk by Grayson Womble scored the winning run. The Dukes held on in the tenth to close it out.

Four pitchers got the job done for Gloucester and held Woodside to only three hits. Cash Watkins threw for two innings until he was replaced by Wood, who also pitched two innings. Fortner pitched for three innings before Brett Lindsay threw the last three innings for the win.

The Dukes had another nail-biter Tuesday when they pulled out a 3-2 win at Denbigh. Details were not available....
