GHS, MHS track teams compete in state meets

The Gloucester and Mathews track and field seasons came to an end this past weekend, as representatives of the two squads traveled to Newport News and Elkton for their respective state meets.

Gloucester athletes traveled to Todd Stadium on Friday and Saturday to compete in the Group 5A/6A State Outdoor Championships.

The highest-placing Dukes at the state meet were Joshua Shackelford, who came in fifth place in the boys’ 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.69, and Ainsley Miller, who came in eighth in the girls’ pole vault with a leap of 9’0”.

Both Shackelford and Miller won their respective events at the regional meet, which was held May 25 and 26 at Gloucester High School.
