GHS, MHS teams return to action after long break

After a longer-than-expected Christmas break, athletes at Gloucester and Mathews high schools were scheduled to continue their winter seasons beginning Friday.

The Jan. 3-4 snowstorm and the frigid weather that immediately followed caused several games to be cancelled at the two schools just as the Blue Devil and Duke teams were poised to resume their basketball, wrestling and other seasons.

On Friday, the GHS varsity basketball teams will travel to Woodside while their JV counterparts will take on the Wolverines. The JV girls start at 4:30 p.m., with the boys at 6.

The GHS varsity basketball teams have their first home games on Tuesday against Heritage, with the girls starting at 5:30 and the boys at 7. The JV teams travel to Heritage.

In Mathews, the Lady Devil basketball team has a home game on Friday against King and Queen (5:30 p.m. JV/7 p.m. varsity). The MHS boys, meanwhile, will travel to King and Queen on Friday. On Saturday, the Mathews wrestlers travel to Franklin High S...
