GHS improves to 3-0 with 11-0 win over Warriors

Going into Tuesday’s home game with Kecoughtan, the Gloucester High School varsity baseball team had not seen the field for a week. Frequent rains may have dampened the fields, but the Dukes offense showed no signs of rust in an 11-0 shellacking of the visiting Warriors. With another matchup with Kecoughtan pending tonight, the Dukes sit at 3-0.

Taking the mound for the home nine was Kirkland Owens, who had a strong showing in relief in the Dukes’ last game. On Tuesday Owens began the game with back-to-back fly outs before allowing a single. He set down the final batter of the opening frame via the strikeout.

The game began defensively, as the first inning saw only one runner reach base for each team. The Dukes pushed across a run in the bottom of the second when Hunter West roped a single and drove in a run, but as Gloucester entered the bottom of the third, the game was competitive at 1-0.
