GHS graduation at CNU

Two decades ago, Gloucester High School held its first-ever graduation at the Freeman Center at Christopher Newport University in Newport News. At the 2005 ceremony, above, GHS counselor Robert Mompoint provided some final advice to graduates Kit Moore, center, and Chris Moody. Gloucester High School continued to hold its commencement ceremony at CNU for the next three years, switching in 2009 to the College of William and Mary. GHS graduation ceremonies were held at W&M until 2020, when COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings forced GHS to change to five days of brief commencement ceremonies at the school, as well as a drive-by celebration in the school’s parking lot. From 2021 until today, graduations have been held at the GHS stadium. This year’s graduation will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday on the school’s football field.
