GHS golfers hold commanding lead

Gloucester High School golfers have a commanding 198 stroke advantage over second-place Menchville to lead the Peninsula District after six matches.

The Dukes had a team total of 1,699 and the Monarchs trailed with 1,879 after Tuesday’s match at The Hamptons. Gloucester won the match with a 309 and Menchville was second with 346. 

GHS senior Hunter Martin has been the medalist in every match and led the field Tuesday with a 70. Nathan Gross and Cameron Baker each followed with 77, Lathan Burnette had an 85, Blake Taylor had an 86 and Jeremy Carr had an 87. 

At Cypress Creek Golf Course in Smithfield on Sept. 11, Martin led the field with a 72, followed by Baker with 79, Gross with 83, Burnette with 88, Carr with 91 and Taylor with 100. The Dukes had a team score of 322, with Menchville trailing at 341.  After the Cypress Creek match, Martin led all district golfers with a 71 average.
