GHS golfers atop district standings

Gloucester High School golfers regained their Peninsula District lead with a 365 team total to win the Aug. 22 district match at the Piankatank River Golf Club. Menchville was second with a 377, followed by Hampton with a 407 and Warwick with 434. 

The win gave the Dukes 893 total strokes after three matches, followed by Menchville with 902, Hampton with 1,009, Warwick with 1,134, Woodside with 1,162 and Kecoughtan with 1,171. 

Gloucester’s Nathan Gross shared the medalist honors with Menchville’s Bobby Wharton at Piankatank, with both golfers turning in an 85. Also, for the Dukes, Jeremy Carr was third with a 90 and Blake Taylor and a Menchville golfer tied for fourth with 92 each. 

Gross leads the district with an average of 79.67, followed by Ethan Hales of Menchville with 83.33, Wharton with 84.67, Carr with 85 and Taylor with 87.
