GHS girls win conference, fall in regionals

Gloucester won the Conference 10 Softball Tournament title last week but Kempsville knocked the Dukes out of the 5A South Regional Tournament with a 4-0 win Monday.

Gloucester put runners on the corners in the first inning against Kempsville after Shelby Alto and Morgan Haywood walked but failed to score. Haywood led off the fourth when she drilled a 1-1 pitch off the center-field fence but that was later erased on a double play.

Nealcyn Watkins singled in the fifth inning for the Dukes and stole second but that effort was also stymied when Alto sharply lined out to the shortstop. The final offensive effort for Gloucester came in the sixth when Alyssa Shackleford walked and advanced to second on a ground out before she was left stranded.

Haywood (15-2) took the loss but pitched brilliantly for the Dukes. She gave up four hits and struck out three while pitching a complete game.
