GHS girls suffer first loss

The Gloucester High School varsity softball team’s record fell to 5-1 with a 2-0 loss to visiting Warwick last Thursday. The Dukes could only manage three singles as they took their first loss of the season.

Warwick loaded the bases with one out in the first inning before Gloucester pitcher Kirsten Greene got the number five hitter to pop out to catcher Bridget Motley. The next Raider at bat singled to left field to give Warwick a 1-0 lead.

Malaika Rilee kept the damage at a minimum for the Dukes as she threw out the runner from second base at the plate to end the inning. Warwick extended the lead to 2-0 with another two-out hit in the third inning.

Warwick pitcher Lindsay Modar held the Dukes’ bats in check and allowed only a single each from Motley, Jessica Hogge and Tori Mielnik. Greene pitched well in the loss, scattering seven hits, walking one and striking out seven.
