GHS girls shut out Warhill, Bethel

The Gloucester High School varsity girls’ soccer team had two shutout wins and a loss in recent action. 

The Dukes got by Warhill, 1-0, in Williamsburg last Thursday. Gloucester came out strong and held possession for most of the first half. GHS junior Brooke Cheatham scored the first and only goal of the match in the seventh minute.

The goal came after junior Sam Leber took a free kick from 40 yards out and flighted the ball just inside the 18-yard box. After the ball bounced around inside the 18, Cheatham was able to get a finishing touch and score.

The Dukes’ defense of Leber, Carli Walke, Christina Parnell, Melody Ferguson and keeper Zoe Fulford kept the Lions from tying up the game, resulting in the shutout.

The Dukes hosted York on Monday and took a 1-0 loss. The game remained scoreless until the last 10 minutes when the Falcons received a free kick and were able to get a goal as the ball bounced around inside the six box. Both teams had multiple chances on f...
