Gloucester High School varsity softball players improved to 4-1 in Conference 10 play with two key conference wins this week over teams that beat them earlier in the season. The Dukes got by visiting Warwick, 4-3, on Tuesday and bested home-standing Kecoughtan, 7-3, on Monday.
Tori Mielnik drove in three runs on two hits to lead Gloucester to a one-run victory over the Raiders. The win ensures the 16-3 Dukes a second or third seed in the conference tournament next week.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, Bridget Motley singled and scored on a two-out hit from Mielnik to tie the game. Emma West, who earlier walked, gave Gloucester a 2-1 lead by scoring on a wild pitch.
The Dukes averted a Warwick rally in the fourth as West threw out Tyra Byrd, who was trying to go from first to third on a bunt single. Left fielder Malaika Rilee ended the inning on a nice running catch toward the left-field foul line.
