GHS girls improve to 13-0; showdown next week with Monarchs

Heading for a showdown with second-place Menchville next week, the Gloucester High School varsity girls continued their unbeaten softball streak with recent wins over Bethel and Warwick. 

The Dukes ran their record to 13-0 on Tuesday by edging host Warwick, 1-0, in eight innings. Bridget Motley doubled home Makenna Keyes for the game’s only run while Mackenzie Smith picked up the win as she wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the eighth.

Keyes led off the eighth inning with a sharply hit single to center field. One out later, with Keyes running on the pitch, Motley laced a double to the left center-field gap to score Keyes.

Smith gave up four hits, striking out 10 while running her record to 11-0. The junior right-hander recorded only two perfect innings but did not allow a runner to second base until the sixth inning.
