GHS girls four with cox win silver

Gloucester High School rowers Casey Martin, Bailey Hamilton, Mackenzie Marbain and Ashleigh Dough, along with coxswain Autumn Rose, were the only GHS medal winners at the Virginia Scholastic Rowing Championships last weekend at Occoquan.

Competing in the first four, the girls won their first heat in 5:58 and their semifinal in 5:46 before posting a time of 5:36 to take second place and silver medals in the final.

The young GHS teams that participated in the state championships raced in senior events, although only one team member, doubles rower Zach Moore, is a senior.

Although they did not win medals, other than the first four girls, the young rowers did well and the boys received the efficiency trophy for reaching the finals in all three of their events.

Also racing for Gloucester, the second four of novices Rachel Witt, Heidi Cooper, Lindsey Rudisill, Nicole Rilee and coxswain Mitchell Moore was second in its heat in 6:17 but placed fourth in the final.

Chase Holland and Moore were second with a time of 5:42 in their doubles heat before placing fourth in the final. The second four of novices Jeb Hutson, James Raha, Aaron Shank, Titus Fox and coxswain Jayden Jones was third in its heat but fifth in the finals.

The varsity four of Russell Simpson, Jordan Dickey, John Cooper, Aaron Parr and coxswain Isaac Hankins was fourth in the qualifying heat in 5:29, putting the boat in the petite final where it placed second in 5:13.

The GHS rowers will depart today for Pennsylvania and the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.
