GHS girls enter region as top seed

Gloucester High School varsity softball players closed a 19-1 season Monday with a 9-2 victory over the visiting Hampton Crabbers.

With the win, the Dukes earned a share of the Peninsula District title and secured the number-one seed in the Eastern Region Tournament. Gloucester will open regional play at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Stoney Run Sports Complex in Newport News, likely against eighth seed Bethel.

GHS pitcher Mackenzie Smith topped off her 16-1 regular season on the mound by striking out 12 batters while allowing only two hits and one earned run. Smith also contributed two hits, including a double. Laura Tobin went two for four with a solo home run and a double while driving in three runs. Emma West had two triples for the Dukes and Makenna Keyes added a two-run home run.
