GHS girls emerge victorious in 2-1 battle with Warriors

The Gloucester High School varsity field hockey team defeated the Nansemond River Warriors, 2-1, last Thursday at GHS. Although the Dukes dominated the stat sheet by outshooting their opponents, 20-1, both teams played tremendously in the middle of the field. The Dukes improved to 8-0 with the win while dropping the Warriors to 8-1.

Both squads were very skilled and aggressive to the ball. The Warriors scored just six minutes into the game off a deflection in the circle and the Dukes were down, 1-0, after the first quarter. Gloucester regrouped and Reese Miller scored with an assist from Channy Johnson to make it 1-1 at halftime.

The Dukes applied more pressure in the third quarter and Aubree Dorsey scored the go-ahead goal with an assist from Kamryn McDonough on a penalty corner. Gloucester earned 11 corners to the Warriors three but due to the efforts of Alexis Adams, Avery Watkins, Ainslee Brown and Kailee Morris, the Warriors could not get off a shot.
